BARTH DOGMATICS IN OUTLINE PDF

So, I decided here to read his brief theology here. Im glad I did. It was difficult to get through at times, but worth it. Unexpectedly biblical, God-honoring, Christ-centered, and even theologically conservative. I say surprisingly and unexpectedly above because Barth is usually known for his Neo-orthodox views, and Ive heard many inside the Reformed camp which I happily settle in rightly critique this. So, I always thought Barth was quite liberal in his theology.

The material published as the Church Dogmatics was originally delivered in lecture format to students at Bonn and then Basel — , with his final incomplete volume IV. In this volume he discusses the purpose and goal of the series, and the form, nature, and know-ability of the revelation. Inside, Barth discusses predestination, its human response, and the ontological foundations thereof. He discusses such things as humanity as the covenant-partner of God, the semi-autonomous being, and the still-dependent being.

The volume closes by exploring the Kingdom of Heaven and its constituents. This volume most directly explores the actions of human beings in response to the Word of God. To fail here is to fail everywhere. It includes such discourses as the exaltation of Christ, the sloth of humankind, the sanctification of humankind, and the Christian life in community under the Spirit. The volume ends with a deep reflection on the interaction of the Spirit with Love inside the Christian community.

The second volume would contain the doctrine of God, the third the doctrine of Creation, the fourth the doctrine of Reconciliation, the fifth the doctrine of Redemption.

A complete outline of the Church Dogmatics can be found in the Barth installment of the Making of Modern Theology series. Torrance and G. Bromiley and many others. Word Books, Clark,

Fortunately his Dogmatics in Outline first published in English incontains in brilliantly concentrated form even in baryh, the essential tenets of his thinking. In particular, the three chapters on the structure of faith Faith as Trust, Faith as Knowledge, and Faith as Confession are particularly useful. The language and density of thoughts and concepts, not length made it a slightly more difficult read, however there are many gems in this that stir the heart and awaken the soul to the mystery of our faith. Knowledge rightly understood, knowledge as wisdom or Sophia rather that Scientia, Barth argues, is the sort of Christian knowledge that is related to faith and encompasses the entire existence of man.

Dogmatics in Outline

Sunday, January 12, Summary of Karl Barth: "Dogmatics in Outline" Dogmatics is the critical science, which task is to provide appropriate and accurate language when speaking about the triune God and the proclamation of the Gospel. This science can only be fully studied in the context of the Church, thus leading to the title Church Dogmatics. Barth uses this science, or Dogmatics, to search and discover truths concerning the Apostles Creed. He links faith to three categories trust, knowledge and confession. Faith as trust, is concerned with meeting Christ. For Barth, this meeting is one where God is the object of faith and the believer the subject.
