It is also the reaction of the body to incoming Reiki energy. This heat is above normal body temperature. Strong heat. This heat makes your palms sweat. The tingling can be experienced as pins and needles, as a magnetic feeling, or as your hands falling asleep. Pulsation, cold.

This week I am giving some useful tips on how to develop mindfulness and utilise Gassho Meiso Meditation so that we know what we are feeling within ourselves and how this benefits us when doing Byosen Reikan Ho. Whenever there is a disease in a person there will always be sensations in their energy field referred to in Japanese as hibiki meaning resonance. The premise being that if something exists on the physical level it will also exist on subtler levels either as an emotion in the emotional body, an idea or thought in the mental body or an energy signature in the etheric body.

It is my experience that in order to be aware of these Hibiki during a treatment one has to become mindful of the present moment. The most effective way for us to do that is to observe our relationship with our own present state, because in order to understand the various sensations we are feeling, first we have to be aware of what is happening in our own energy field.

As scanning involves to varying degrees opening ourselves to our client, it is important to know what our present state is before we go and change it by merging ourselves with their energy. I believe it is this lack of present state awareness coupled with a lack of grounding that has led many people incorrectly to advocate the use of protection in Reiki.

Merging is something we do every day naturally. Every time you walk into a building you get a sense energetically of your surroundings and when you meet somebody new, you get a sense about them. Traditionally when Reiki was taught by Dr Usui, great importance was placed on the practitioners developing their ability to scan and feel areas of disturbance in another persons energy field.

This was something it is believed that should take students many years of discipline, practice and application to become good at. In my classes I have approached teaching scanning assuming that it is a natural thing that we do every day.

These sensations may be experienced in our hands as they are placed over particular areas or even in our own body as we mirror what our client is feeling. It is my experience that when we allow this to happen, we are able to track very accurately the shifts that are occurring as they happen and if the client releases emotionally, it can have a powerful emotional affect on us.

Following on from last week where we prepared our sacred space, you will have hopefully found yourself standing in the centre of the room facing East with your hands in Gassho. Notice what you notice about your breathing today.

Is it deep and relaxed or shallow and tense? If it is shallow and tense allow yourself to be aware of the feelings and thoughts that are holding it in this way.

Be aware of your shoulders too and notice how they feel and what you might be carrying as burdens today. Allow your attention to spread to your abdomen and Diaphragm once again notice how it feels and if it is tight and contracted, what emotions or thoughts hold it in place. Move your awareness to your throat and observe how it feels, open and relaxed or tight and constricted?

Once again if it is tight observe what feelings and thoughts arise as you focus your attention on it. Now bring your awareness to your lower region and once again be aware of how your lower back, hips and pelvis feel. Are they relaxed flexible or is their tightness, pain and rigidity? Allow yourself to feel any emotions and notice what thoughts come up for you. Take your awareness to your forehead and cranium. Be aware of how you feel there today. Is your mind clear or a bit fuzzy?

What emotions and thoughts come to you as you focus on this area? Finally be aware of your connection to the Earth. Do you feel grounded and anchored or are you in your head? Notice the temperature of your legs and feet. Give permission to your body to release and let go of anything you are carrying Continue until you feel expanded, clear and as relaxed as possible. Begin connecting to the Earth below you by taking your minds attention into your Hara Belly. Continue until you feel really connected.

Finally become aware of the whole of you, here and now, expanded and connected with everything around you, above, below, in front, behind and to the sides all meeting in the heart through Gassho. I always use this simple prayer. I ask that all that takes place here through Reiki is of the very highest good for all concerned. The treatment begins the moment your client arrives.

Pay special attention to your first impressions as they will usually be right. Allow your attention to focus on the space between your hands and their body and without trying to do anything simply notice what is there.

After about three to four circuits, you will find that sensations occur in your hands and as you begin to notice them, they will change depending on the different areas of the body you go over. Notice yourself being drawn to one area in particular. That is your start point for the treatment. Trust yourself and stay intrigued by what is happening and the Reiki energy will guide you.

After a treatment we may be left feeling depleted or emotional as a result of the experience. It is therefore important that we find methods to release these feelings and return to our natural state of balance. Next week I will share some great methods for clearing your energy Thanks for listening.

Understanding Byosen Scanning, Part II

Gojora Notice every little thing. These anomalies are the areas that require most Reiki healing. Both Usui sensei and Hayashi sensei gave their beginner students handbooks that explained hand positions to be used for the most common ailments of that time. Before you start the treatment, you perform Reiji Ho, and because of this, you know where you should place your hands for the treatment to be most effective.
