EVERY TONGUE SHALL CONFESS BY ZZ PACKER PDF

Packer first starts the backstory in this short story on the second page. However, the way she does it is really quite good. When she sees Deacon McCreedy, it sets off the start of a backstory that is important to the rest of the story. What this also means is that the backstory is not necessarily revealed in its entirety immediately. The parts of the backstory are revealed when the character is prompted to do so.

Also, this creates a great transition. One of the hardest things to do is write a smooth transition from present to past.

It can be very hard and if it is not done in a particular and effective way it can be very confusing for the reader. Packer uses the technique I mentioned above to create excellent transitions. The tense does not change until the character is prompted by something or someone. In the first transition Clareese is prompted to introduce part of the backstory by Deacon McCreedy.

Clareese transitions to some backstory when she starts to think about her former testimonies. It makes sense to the reader because it follows an already established idea rather than introducing one that is completely and entirely new.

The backstory then, seems to connect to the end of the story by showing that Clareese has seen both kinds of people. However, only one kind of those people had taken true interest in her.

The Deaon McCreedy had assaulted her in her home when she had been nice to him and provided for him a meal. The Pastor had failed to take her troubles into consideration and rather used her for his own gains in the church. Share this:.

Religion is typically thought of as something that empowers, strengthens, and saves, as is portrayed in the video below. However, Packer exposes a different view of religion. In her stories, religion Christianity, in particular is displayed in quite a negative light; it keeps women submissive, unhappy, and overly sheltered. After the deacon of her church unsuccessfully tries to sexually pursue her, he ignores her existence almost entirely-- the only exception is when he needs favors from her.

Backstory in “Every Tongue Shall Confess”

Troop was doomed from the first day of camp; they were white girls, their complexions a blend of ice cream: strawberry, vanilla. They turtled out from their bus in pairs, their rolled-up sleeping bags chromatized with Disney characters: Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Mickey Mouse; or the generic ones cheap parents bought: washed-out rainbows, unicorns, curly-eyelashed frogs. Some clutched Igloo coolers and still others held on to stuffed toys like pacifiers, looking all around them like tourists determined to be dazzled. From that point forward, everything else is undertow. The eight stories in Drinking Coffee Elsewhere are, as the dust jacket photo attests, messages in a bottle or, more accurately, lightning in a bottle. Not only is the writing crisp and sharp, but Packer has a firm chokehold on each of her pitiable characters, most of whom are black teenage girls.
