Shelves: new-testament-theology One of my personal favourite books. George Smeaton, a 19th century Scottish theologian, wrote a two-part theological exploration of the New Testament teaching of the Atonement. This first part is concerned with working through the gospel accounts, particularly focusing on the words of Jesus, picking out all of the texts that concern the atonement and exploring them each in turn. This book is held in such high regard by myself because through it I was pulled into a deeper and fuller understanding One of my personal favourite books. This is a study of the doctrine of the Atonement as taught by Christ Himself - in other words, all the saying of Christ regarding the Atonement are exegeted and classified into groups by theme. Smeaton is an exceptional author.

Both were reprinted by the Banner of Truth in but neither appear to be in print and at least one is in print. So who is George Smeaton? First, he examines and expounds every passage of Scripture from Acts through Revelation that deals with the atonement.
And with that comes passion for the person of Christ and gratitude for his finished work on the cross. Today, for example, some people ask how it can be just for God to punish an innocent man, Jesus, for the sins of other people. Before Christ died for our sins, however, he lived a perfectly obedient life. He fully obeyed the moral will of God every second of his life. Smeaton examines how Jesus explains his death and resurrection as the guarantee that God indeed forgives those sinners who trust in his substitutionary death for the resolution of their personal sin dilemma.
In these gospel accounts, Jesus offered insight into the divine view of the cross. Who is George Smeaton? Are these works in print? My own conviction is that these two great volumes [on the atonement] should regularly be in the hands of every person who teaches and preaches the gospel of Christ. Share this:.
